US healthcare is mostly profit-driven. How do profits influence patient care – for better or for worse? How do profits influence patient costs – higher or lower? Dr. Joshua Freeman is Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine, University of Kansas School of Medicine and author of the 2015 book “Health, Medicine, and Justice.” He has written and spoken extensively about the challenge of providing healthcare to people who need it at a price they can afford. It’s not a simple challenge, and the advantages and disadvantages of the profit-motive are not obvious. Dr. Freeman will allow ample time for audience questions and comments.

Dr. Freeman is the Alice M. Patterson, MD and Harold L. Patterson, MD Professor and Chair, Department of Family Medicine, University of Kansas School of Medicine. He is the author of the 2015 book “Health, Medicine, and Justice” and maintains a blog “Medicine and Social Justice” medicinesocialjustice.blogspot.com. He has written and spoken extensively about medical education, minority recruitment to medical school, and the contribution of social factors to public health.
