June 26, 2015
12:15 PM PST – 1:15 PM PST
614 SW 11th Ave., Portland, OR
Doors open at 11:30am; Program begins at 12:15pm.
Did you know that President John F. Kennedy came up with the idea for VISTA? Or that many of the best-known anti-poverty programs, including Head Start and credit unions, were created by VISTA members? Launched in 1965, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for 50 years. Since then, 190,000 VISTA members have served in over 4,000 communities working to alleviate poverty.
Join us for a discussion on poverty through the lens of AmeriCorps VISTA. Hear from two alumni– Nancy Hales, First Lady of Portland and Rachel Bristol, former CEO of the Oregon Food Bank– and the National Director of AmeriCorps VISTA and former White House aide, Paul Monteiro. Learn about how national service can be a shaper for a lifetime of service, creative solutions to poverty from the national and local perspective and much more. Help us celebrate 50 years of fighting poverty!
The cost is $23.00 for members and $30.00 for nonmembers. Members may bring up to two guests at the member rate. Reservations are required for lunches and reservations close at 5:00pm on the Wednesday prior to the forum.
