Why are we talking about this at the state level instead of in Washington, D.C.?

Answer

The crisis in our health care system is not a state problem or a Medicaid problem. It is a national problem and a system problem and it cannot be solved at the state level without fundamental changes in the federal structure within which state efforts must take place.

But the U.S. Congress has, up to this point, been unwilling or unable to address the difficult questions that must be answered if we want to create a more equitable and sustainable system. And we don't have time to wait for the congress to do something. We can do better by taking charge of this issue ourselves.

That is why we've launched WeCanDoBetter.org - to create a venue for engagement to pass a bill in the 2007 Oregon legislature to spark the kind of serious national debate that we so desperately need - and to force Congress to compare the current failing system with a comprehensive vision of what an equitable and sustainable U.S. health care system should look like.
