For the last four years I was attending Lewis & Clark in Portland and in my free time, nursing a massive soft spot in my heart for the Archimedes Movement. This last summer I graduated and moved to Malawi, where I work on mHealth (mobile phones & health) projects with FrontlineSMS:Medic.
The message below is the result of a collaborative effort among Archimedes Movement Community Leadership Council members and staff. Members of Congress are holding town hall meetings all over the country in August. We're maintaining a list of the Oregon ones here.
Now is the time to share your views on health reform.
Liz Baxter and I attended the ‘Oregon Health Information Technology (HIT) Stakeholder Engagement Meeting' in Salem on Thursday July 23.
Three ways to get your message heard in Salem
In the midst of a legislative session with tough economic decisions to be made, it's very easy for the well-intentioned Oregonians serving in our legislature to lose sight of the goals of health reform. We have three ways to help you remind them to be bold and set a course for Oregon's future health system.
This morning the Oregonian published my opinion piece supporting Dr. John Kitzhaber to become either the next Secretary of Health and Human Services or the Health Reform Czar in the White House Office of Health Reform (or both).
The New York Times reports (link here) that Florida's legislature recently decided to allow insurance companies to sell health insurance that does not cover many basic needs.

This post started out as a comment on Mallen's recent blog, but it was getting kind of long, so I just decided to share it with everyone on my own blog.
I havn't been able to dedicate as much time to AM in the past weeks as I would have liked, but I always feel it is most important to contribute when I have a story about why I belive the work of AM is so unique and so important.
The following is from www.RebootingDemocracy.com
In the 1970s, up-and-coming leaders like Earl Blumenauer, Vera Katz, Les AuCoin, Hardy Myers, and Gretchen & Stephen Kafoury gathered for the Democracy Forum. None were yet elected officials. Over the next generation, they built a network that helped Oregon transition from its timber-focused, small state past to a bright and diversified future. These talented folks brought visionary ideas and strong people together to move Oregon forward.
In 2006, the Bus Project hosted the Rebooting Democracy Conference, engaging hundreds of Oregonians in a lively weekend of people-powered politics. In three action-packed days, folks gathered for workshops, trainings, issue-panels, and a unique ballot measure caucus.
This January, Rebooting Democracy is Back!
Events are scheduled from 2:00 on friday the 11th to 2:15 on Sunday the 13th. Dr. Kitzhaber is giving closing remarks at 2:00 on Sunday. You can find the rest of the schedule on their website. Tickets are pricey, but they offer scholarships if you volunteer for two hours. I'll be running around sporting my We Can Do Better shirt all three days. I would love company.

cheers

35:05 minutes (8 MB)My name is Isaac, I'm a student at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. About a month ago, I took a break from organizing with the Archimedes Movement for a semester of study in Havana, Cuba. My program here revolves around learning Spanish, exploring Cuban culture academically and as a participant, and pursuing an independent photojournalism project.

Need a ride?
We've chartered a bus to take folks from the Portland area down to Salem. You'll need to meet at 9:45 AM at a close-in Southeast location. Call or email Matt Webber to reserve a seat (503-709-8574).
Many local Archimedes Chapters are arranging carpools to the rally. Contact your local chapter leader or Matt (see above) if you need a ride or can offer a ride.
I was first told to Google the Archimedes Movement last spring by a near stranger who had noticed my morbid fascination with the absurdity of our health care system. I had been attracted to health care by an interest in biomedicine and research, but this stranger easily could tell I felt drawn to address the gap between the level of health biomedical science has enabled us to achieve, and the level of health our population actually enjoys. Soon after, I attended the Archimedes kickoff event and have been increasingly involved since.
